Ads Group Structure

What Are Ad Groups and How Do They Work

An ad group contains one or more ads that share the same target. It is used to organize your ads by a common theme.

You set a bid, or price, to be used when an ad group's keywords trigger an ad to show. You can also set prices for individual keywords within the ad group.

Ad Group Structure

Organize by themes – the most effective way to set up your ad groups.

Example #1: Small business/website/product catalog

Example #2: Medium business/website/product catalog

Example #3: Large business/website/product catalog

For large product catalogs, you can create a campaign per product (e.g. furniture) and have separate ad groups for each of the different product types (e.g. sofa, bed, table, chair). The organization will be based on how large your business or product catalog is.

Ad groups may change based on your optimization. Understand what is working and scale that, identify what’s not working and remove that.

You always want to collect clean data and the only way to do that is by organizing by themes.

Campaigns improve over time. You’re gonna collect data and make new campaigns based on that data. Google is also going to collect data regarding what you’re doing using conversion tracking. As you do more ads with them, their algorithm is going to improve as well as tracking.

How to Access Ad Group Settings

You can access the ad group settings when you’re done with the campaign settings. When you’re still in the campaign settings tab, all you have to do is click “Save and continue” and it’ll take you to the ad group settings.

Ad group types:

  • Standard – this type is recommended when you’re just starting out; this gives you the ability to use your own values, get the cleanest data possible, and understand how to optimize.
  • Dynamic – you can select this type later on when you want to experiment
